Sweet Preacher Sloppy Joes
The saucy, two-handed affair that is a “Sloppy Joe” is down-and-dirty weeknight cooking at its best. (We mean that literally, this sandwich will likely stain your shirt.) For good reason, they’re easy to assemble, endlessly versatile (use any ground meat that you please!), and deliver a tangy tomato sweetness that satisfies. We’re biased of course, but our Sweet Preacher BBQ sauce takes the iconic sandwich to eleven.

Consider this recipe a basic guide and swap in veggies you have on hand. You can use any color onion, for instance, or swap in carrots for the celery. If you like your Joes on the spicy side, finish with several dashes of hot sauce.
Ingredients
-
1 tablespoon olive oil
-
1 medium onion, finely chopped
-
1 celery stalk, finely chopped
-
½ bell pepper (any color), finely chopped
-
1 jalapeño, stemmed, seeded, and finely chopped
-
1 tablespoon The Go-To seasoning
-
2 lbs ground meat (e.g. beef, bison, or turkey)
-
2 tablespoons tomato paste
-
1 cup crushed or finely chopped canned tomatoes
-
½ cup Sweet Preacher BBQ Sauce
-
Hamburger buns or potato rolls, for serving
Directions
Heat the oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add the onions, celery, bell pepper, jalapeño, and The Go-To seasoning and cook, stirring, until the mixture is very soft, about 10 minutes (adjust heat as needed to prevent the vegetables from browning.
Add the ground meat to the vegetable mixture (raise the heat if you lowered it) and cook until well-browned. Reduce the heat and add the tomato paste and cook until it comes fragrant.
Add the canned tomatoes and Sweet Preacher BBQ sauce and bring the mixture to a lively simmer. Reduce heat and simmer until the mixture is thick, about 15 minutes.
Serve on hamburger buns, or potato rolls (toasted or soft and squishy) with your favorite accompaniments (may we suggest tart pickle spears and potato chips?).
