Spam Musubi
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word “Spam.” In the 1975 British comedy the Knights of the Round Table sing that they “eat Spam a lot,” probably because it rhymes with “Camelot.” This scene prompted me to ask my dad about Spam, and eventually try it for dinner when mom was gone. If I remember correctly, he pan-fried the pink stuff in slices with a side of scrambled eggs. It was okay, but not exciting, and we never ate it again.
It was unfortunate my dad and I didn’t know about Spam Musubi. It’s a popular dish in Hawaii that actually makes Spam seem cool. Hawaiians consume more Spam per capita than any other American state and they know what to do with it; they treat it kind of like sushi. It’s minimal, portable, inexpensive and found in convenience stores all over Hawaii. It’s good to find cheap food in Hawaii, sitting on an island in the middle of the ocean means you have the most expensive groceries in the United States. Not a lot of work here. This is easy to do at home.
